If someone has died and they used Discord, the main choices are to leave the account alone, delete it if you have authority, or deal only with billing and server continuity. Discord says it cannot give families access to an account or disclose private account information, but it can consider deletion requests and billing issues.
That privacy boundary matters. Discord is often where private friendships, support groups, gaming communities and messages live. Before you rush to close the account, pause long enough to work out whether there is anything practical or sentimental that should be preserved lawfully.
First: decide what problem you are trying to solve
A Discord account may be low priority, or it may affect money, moderation and access to a community. Start with the reason you are acting.
| Situation | Sensible first step |
|---|---|
| There is a paid Nitro subscription | Check bank or card payments and contact Discord or the bank |
| The account owns or moderates a server | Identify other admins before deleting anything |
| The account contains private messages | Do not try to bypass access controls |
| The family simply wants the profile removed | Request deletion through Discord Support |
| You have login access and authority to act | Consider what needs preserving before deletion |
If you are using GetPassage to organise post-death tasks, add Discord under digital accounts and note whether the action is billing, server continuity, or account deletion. That keeps it separate from higher-priority legal and financial notifications.
Can Discord give you access to the account?
Discord's guidance is clear: for privacy and security reasons, it does not provide access, disclose personal information, make changes, or share data tied to an account.
If you already have access to the email address associated with the Discord account, Discord says you may be able to initiate a password reset. That is different from Discord handing over access. You should only do this if you have proper authority and it is necessary, for example to protect a community, cancel an active subscription, or preserve information the family is entitled to handle.
Avoid logging in just to read private messages. Grief can make curiosity feel urgent, but private conversations may include other people's sensitive information too.
How to delete a Discord account after death
If you can access the deceased person's Discord account, Discord's route is account deletion from within the account settings:
- Log in to Discord on mobile, desktop, or the web.
- Open User Settings.
- Go to My Account.
- Scroll to Account Removal.
- Choose Delete Account.
- Confirm with the account password.
Once confirmed, Discord says the account deletion process begins and the person is logged out.
If you have access to the email address associated with the account, Discord says you can request deletion from that email by including a clear confirmation such as: "I confirm that I would like to delete the account associated with [email address]."
If you are writing from a different email address, Discord may ask for documents. Its public guidance lists account details, proof of death, proof of relationship or authority, and requester identity. Examples include a death certificate or coroner's report, marriage certificate, birth certificate, will, estate letter, power of attorney, photo ID or passport. Only send what Discord asks for, and redact unnecessary details such as addresses or dates of birth where allowed.
What about Nitro, boosts and paid subscriptions?
Treat paid Discord services as a money task. Look for payments to Discord on bank and card statements. If payments are still being taken, there are two routes:
- contact Discord Support about billing connected to a deceased or incapacitated user
- contact the bank or card provider to stop future payments where appropriate
Do not assume deleting the app from a phone cancels billing. App deletion, account access and card billing are separate things.
If the estate is being administered formally, keep a note of any refunds, final charges or cancelled subscriptions. Small recurring payments can otherwise continue for months unnoticed.
Check server ownership before deleting the account
Discord accounts can own servers. If the person ran a family group, gaming community, charity server or workplace-adjacent community, deletion may affect moderation and continuity.
Before deleting the account, ask:
- did they own any servers?
- are there other administrators with full permissions?
- is the server still active and useful to others?
- does the server include sensitive personal data?
- would closure upset people who rely on it for support?
If other trusted admins exist, they may be able to keep the server safe without needing access to the deceased person's account. If no one else has control, contact Discord Support and explain the situation. Do not promise members that Discord will transfer ownership automatically; platform decisions are usually case-specific.
Preserve what matters before closure
Discord is not only a utility account. It can hold friendships, voice memories, usernames, shared jokes and communities that mattered deeply to someone. If you have lawful access, consider whether there are screenshots, server announcements, contact details for close online friends, or memorial messages the family may want to keep.
Keep this proportionate. You do not need to archive everything. The aim is to avoid losing irreplaceable memories or practical contacts because an account was closed too quickly.
A simple checklist
Use this order:
- Confirm whether the account has any paid subscription or recurring payment.
- Check whether the person owned or administered any important servers.
- Decide whether there is anything lawful and necessary to preserve.
- Contact other admins if server continuity matters.
- Request billing help or deletion through Discord Support.
- Keep copies of correspondence for the estate records.
When to leave the account alone
Sometimes the best action is no action. If there is no billing, no risk, no harassment, and no family need to remove the profile, leaving the account inactive may be kinder and simpler.
Act when there is a clear reason: money is leaving the estate, a server needs continuity, the profile is causing distress, or an executor or close family member has decided deletion is appropriate. Otherwise, this can wait while you handle the urgent tasks after the death.
