What to Do With an Etsy Shop After Someone Dies in the UK
If someone who died sold through Etsy, the shop may be more than a personal account. It can contain customer orders, intellectual property, stock, messages, tax records and money owed to the estate.
Etsy’s own policy says it cannot offer access to a deceased member’s account, but it can work with an executor or next of kin to close the account and, in some cases, provide certain content from it. Expect to provide documentation, such as a death certificate.
Why an Etsy shop needs careful handling
Many Etsy shops are small, personal and creative. That can make them emotionally difficult to deal with. A shop may contain handmade work, customer reviews, product photos and writing that feels like part of the person’s identity.
At the same time, it may also be an estate asset. There may be:
- open orders customers have paid for
- money due through Etsy Payments
- refunds, disputes or chargebacks
- physical stock and materials
- digital downloads still being sold
- customer messages waiting for a reply
- tax or bookkeeping records
- designs, photographs or brand assets
For that reason, do not delete, sell or give away shop-related items until the executor or administrator understands what exists.
First steps in the first week
Start by identifying whether the person was actively selling. Search their email for Etsy order notifications, payment emails, customer messages, shipping labels and tax summaries. If the person had a studio, desk or stock cupboard, keep everything together until you know what has been sold and what has not.
Make a simple note of:
| Item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Shop name | Etsy shop URL or username |
| Email address | The email linked to Etsy, if known |
| Open orders | Buyer name, item, date and status if visible |
| Physical stock | Finished items, works in progress and materials |
| Digital products | Downloads, templates or files sold through the shop |
| Money | Any balance, payout, refund or fee information |
| Messages | Customer issues that may need urgent handling |
This does not need to be perfect. It is a holding record so nothing important is lost.
Contacting Etsy after a death
Etsy asks people who know a deceased member to contact its Help Center and include the member’s full name and email address. If you are an executor or next of kin, Etsy says it takes account privacy seriously and cannot simply give you access to the account.
That means you should not expect Etsy to hand over the password or let you run the shop. The realistic outcomes are usually closing the account, dealing with limited account content, and resolving money or customer issues where Etsy is able to help.
Have these details ready:
- the person’s full name
- their Etsy shop name or profile URL
- the email address used for the account, if known
- your name and relationship to the person
- a death certificate or other proof of death
- evidence of executor or administrator authority if requested
- a short explanation of any urgent open orders or customer issues
What if customers are waiting for orders?
This is the most urgent practical problem. Customers may have paid for items the person had not yet made or dispatched. If you have lawful access to relevant email notifications, identify any paid orders and tell the executor.
Do not continue trading through the shop unless the executor has taken advice and authority is clear. A family member finishing one handmade order may feel kind, but it can create problems if the item is not as described, if there are safety requirements, or if the shop was part of a business.
Usually the safest choices are to stop new sales, preserve stock, and work through Etsy’s support process to resolve open orders or refunds.
Money, balances and the estate
Any Etsy balance, payout, refund or business asset should be treated as part of the estate until the legal position is clear. This includes finished stock, materials bought for the shop, packaging, design files, customer deposits and money due from sales.
If the estate needs probate, the executor may have to include business assets and account balances in the estate valuation. If the shop was very small, the paperwork may be modest, but the principle is the same: do not distribute money or stock informally before the estate position is understood.
If there are tax records, invoices or annual summaries, keep them. The executor may need them for final tax checks or estate records.
Digital products and intellectual property
Etsy shops sometimes sell digital downloads: patterns, templates, artwork, planners or printable files. These can keep selling unless the shop is paused or closed, which may create new customer obligations after the seller has died.
Digital files may also have copyright value. The right to use or sell them may pass under the will or estate rules, but that does not mean a relative should immediately re-upload them elsewhere. Keep copies safe and let the executor decide.
For handmade brands, also preserve:
- product photographs
- logo files and shop banners
- pattern files or design notes
- supplier details
- packaging designs
- social media accounts linked to the shop
Should the shop be closed or preserved?
There is no single right answer. Closure may be best if there are no plans to continue the business, if customers need clarity, or if the shop is emotionally distressing. Preservation may be useful while the executor reviews stock, records and intellectual property.
If the shop has sentimental value, save screenshots of the homepage, product listings and reviews before closure. Reviews from customers can mean a lot to family members later.
GetPassage can help you track digital accounts like Etsy next to formal estate tasks, so creative businesses, subscriptions and online balances do not disappear from the admin list.
A practical checklist
- Find the Etsy shop name, URL and linked email address.
- Check for open orders, customer messages and recent payouts.
- Secure physical stock, packaging and business records.
- Save screenshots of the shop, listings and reviews if the family wants them.
- Contact Etsy through the Help Center with the member’s details.
- Provide proof of death and authority if requested.
- Record any balance, refund or stock as estate information.
- Do not continue selling until authority and responsibility are clear.
Final thought
An Etsy shop can be a business, a creative legacy and an emotional archive all at once. Move slowly enough to preserve what matters, but quickly enough to stop new customer problems. The executor’s job is not only to close accounts; it is to protect value, records and memories while the family decides what should happen next.
