How to Notify esure After a Death in the UK
If the person who died had esure car, home or travel insurance, tell esure before making assumptions about cancelling the policy. Insurance can protect a car, property or trip during a messy transition, and ending cover too early can create avoidable risk.
This guide explains what to gather, which esure contact routes to use, and the questions to ask so the estate is not left with uninsured property, missed refunds or unclear claims.
The quick answer
esure lists customer contact numbers for car, home and travel insurance, plus a website chatbot and My Account route. For bereavement, start with the relevant customer service team, explain that the policyholder has died, and ask what esure needs to update, continue, transfer or cancel the policy.
For car insurance queries, esure's contact page lists 0345 609 8971. For home insurance queries, it lists 0345 045 8000. For travel queries, it lists 0345 600 3950. esure also lists a 24/7 chatbot on its website, with transfer to live chat during operating hours.
Do not cancel cover too quickly
It is understandable to want to reduce bills immediately. But with insurance, the order matters. If a home is still furnished, a car is still parked on the road, or a trip booking needs cancelling, there may be a claim or continuing risk.
Before asking esure to cancel, check:
- what the policy covers
- whether anyone else is named on it
- whether a vehicle is still being driven or kept on a public road
- whether the home is occupied, unoccupied or about to be sold
- whether there is an open or possible claim
- whether premiums are monthly or annual
- whether a refund or cancellation fee may apply
If you are the executor or administrator, your job is to protect the estate as well as stop unnecessary spending. Sometimes that means keeping cover in place for a short period while ownership, sale or occupancy is sorted out.
Which esure team to contact
Use the policy type to choose the route. Keep notes of every call or chat.
| Policy type | Main issue after death | esure route to start with |
|---|---|---|
| Car insurance | Is the car still insured, stored, sold or driven by someone else? | Car insurance customer service or claims if there has been an incident |
| Home insurance | Is the property occupied, empty, being cleared or being sold? | Home insurance customer service; claims if damage, theft or escape of water has happened |
| Travel insurance | Is there a cancelled trip, medical claim or unused policy? | Travel insurance customer service or the relevant claims route |
If there is an urgent home or motor claim, use the claims or emergency number rather than waiting for a general customer service reply. If there is no urgency, start with customer service and ask for the bereavement or policy administration process.
Information to have ready
You may not need all of this on the first call, but having it nearby makes the conversation easier:
- the policyholder's full name
- policy number, if known
- address on the policy
- date of death
- your name, contact details and relationship to the person
- whether you are executor, administrator, next of kin or helping the family
- whether there is a will
- whether a claim is open or expected
- what should happen to the insured car, home or trip
If you cannot find the policy number, use the person's name, address and date of birth. esure may be able to trace the policy, but it may need to complete security checks before discussing details.
Documents esure may ask for
Insurers often ask for proof of death and proof of authority before changing a policy, paying a refund or discussing detailed account information. esure will confirm its own requirements, but prepare for possible requests such as:
- a copy of the death certificate or interim death certificate
- a copy of the will, if there is one
- grant of probate or letters of administration for larger or more complex estate matters
- proof of your identity and contact details
- vehicle, property or claim documents relevant to the policy
Do not send original documents unless esure specifically asks for them. Clear copies are usually safer. If you upload or email documents, keep a record of what was sent and when.
Car insurance: key questions
Car insurance needs attention because legal responsibility can change quickly after death. Ask esure:
- whether cover continues after the policyholder's death
- whether named drivers are still covered
- whether the car can be driven, moved or stored
- whether the policy can be transferred or must be cancelled
- what happens if the vehicle is sold by the estate
- whether any refund is due
If the car is not going to be used, check the legal position separately. A vehicle kept on a public road normally needs to be taxed and insured. If it is off road, a Statutory Off Road Notification may be relevant. Do not rely on the old policy until esure confirms the position.
Home insurance: key questions
A home can become higher risk after someone dies, especially if it is empty while the family clears possessions or waits for probate. Tell esure if the property is unoccupied or will become unoccupied.
Ask:
- how long the existing policy covers an unoccupied property
- whether there are inspection, heating, water or security requirements
- whether cover changes while probate is underway
- whether the policy can stay in place until sale
- how to handle claims if the executor is not yet formally appointed
This matters because insurers can apply different conditions to empty homes. If a leak, break-in or storm damage happens and esure was not told the property was empty, the claim could become more difficult.
Travel insurance: key questions
If the person who died had travel insurance, the issue may be an unused policy, a cancelled trip or a claim connected with illness or death. Ask which claims administrator applies, because esure's travel contact details can vary depending on when the policy was bought or renewed.
Ask what documents are needed for cancellation or a claim, whether travelling companions are affected, and whether any booked trip provider should be contacted first.
Payments, refunds and estate records
If premiums are paid monthly, ask when the next payment is due and whether esure will stop it. If premiums were paid annually, ask whether a pro-rata refund is available after cancellation. Refunds should usually be treated as estate money and recorded for the executor or administrator.
GetPassage can help you track these practical steps across insurers, banks, utilities and subscriptions so nothing depends on memory at a time when concentration is often poor.
A simple call script
You can say:
I am calling to notify esure that the policyholder has died. I need to understand whether the policy should continue, change or be cancelled, and what documents you need from the executor or family.
Then ask for:
- the policy status
- whether cover continues today
- any documents required
- what happens to direct debits or refunds
- a reference number for the call
- written confirmation by email or post
Final thought
The safest approach is not simply to cancel. First confirm what is insured, what risk remains, and who has authority to act. Once esure has confirmed the position, you can make a clean decision and keep the estate records tidy.
