When someone dies, their Reddit account may seem less urgent than bank accounts, utilities or probate. Even so, it can contain valued writing, trusted community relationships, moderation responsibilities and clues about paid subscriptions. Acting in the wrong order could make useful material harder to find or leave a community without an active moderator.
The safest approach is to pause, establish whether you have lawful access, preserve what matters and only then consider deletion.
Understand what Reddit offers after a death
Reddit's official help pages do not evidence a deceased-user memorialisation pathway. That is different from platforms that publish a process for turning a profile into a memorial. It also means families should not assume Reddit will delete an account for them. Reddit's account deletion guidance states that administrators cannot delete an account on a user's behalf.
Start with lawful access, not password guessing
Only access the account if you are lawfully authorised to do so. Being a relative or executor does not automatically mean every method of entering a digital account is appropriate. Do not guess passwords, bypass security, impersonate the person or use access that you are not entitled to use. If there is doubt, seek appropriate legal advice.
Look for instructions the person deliberately left for their executor or family, such as a digital-assets record. Check whether Reddit was accessed through Google, Apple or a phone number, but avoid changing linked accounts until you understand what else depends on them.
If nobody has lawful access, skip attempts to enter the account and use Reddit's support request form. Select the closest relevant support or privacy route and explain that the user has died, your relationship to them, what you are asking Reddit to consider and what authority or documents you can provide. A request does not guarantee deletion or any particular outcome.
Preserve useful public posts before taking action
First review what is already public without signing in. Note the username, profile URL, important post and comment links, and any communities where the person was active. Save copies only where there is a genuine family, estate or community reason to do so, and handle sensitive material carefully. Public visibility does not remove privacy, copyright or confidentiality concerns.
A post may contain family memories, practical expertise or answers that still help other people. Decide whether it is better left available, saved privately or removed, if lawful account access makes removal possible. Record links as well as screenshots because context and comment threads can matter.
This preservation step must come before deletion. Reddit explains that deleting an account does not delete its posts or comments. They remain on Reddit but are disassociated from the deleted account. Any posts or comments that should be removed must therefore be removed before the account itself is deleted.
Protect communities and moderator continuity
If the person moderated a subreddit, account deletion can affect more than the profile. Check whether other moderators are active and whether the deceased person held knowledge, permissions or community resources that need an orderly handover. Do not post from their account as though they were still alive.
Where you have lawful access, consider alerting another established moderator in a clear and limited way before any irreversible action. Preserve only the operational information that the community legitimately needs. If the subreddit has no other active moderator, Reddit's support and moderator-help routes may be appropriate, but do not promise the community that ownership or permissions will be transferred.
Check Premium and recurring charges separately
Look for Reddit Premium payments on bank or card statements, app-store subscriptions and email receipts. This is also a reason to check recurring charges even if the family decides to leave the profile untouched. Record the merchant, amount, billing route and renewal date before contacting the relevant bank, card issuer or subscription provider.
Reddit states that deleting an account does not cancel Reddit Premium. Its guidance says the subscription should be cancelled separately before deletion. If billing is through Apple or Google, the subscription may need to be handled through that provider rather than inside Reddit. Do not assume that removing an app, losing access to a device or deleting the Reddit profile has stopped payment.
Keep a simple record of notifications, cancellations and replies. GetPassage can help families organise digital-account tasks alongside the wider work that follows a death, without treating every account as if it needs the same outcome.
Watch for scams and impersonation
An inactive public profile can be copied or used as material for impersonation. Watch for lookalike usernames, unexpected direct messages, fundraising claims, links sent to friends or posts suggesting someone controls the deceased person's identity. Ask close contacts not to send money or security information in response to unverified messages.
Use Reddit's reporting tools for suspicious accounts or content, and retain URLs and screenshots before reporting. If a message concerns money, another person's safety or possible crime, consider contacting the relevant bank or police service as appropriate. Do not engage extensively with a suspected scammer or disclose death certificates, identity documents or account credentials publicly.
If deletion is the chosen option
Deletion should be the final step, not the first. Confirm that important public material has been saved, unwanted posts or comments have been removed where appropriate, moderator responsibilities have been considered, and Premium or other recurring payments have been dealt with.
Reddit's deletion instructions require account access and confirmation. Ordinarily, the Reddit password is needed. If the account was created through Google or Apple, Reddit says the linked account must be disconnected and a password created if one does not already exist. An account created with a phone number and no password uses a six-digit confirmation code. These are user-controlled processes, not a route for a family to ask an administrator to delete the account.
Account deletion is irreversible. The username becomes unavailable, the account cannot be reactivated and Reddit administrators cannot restore it. Posts and comments remain unless removed beforehand, but they are no longer associated with the username. Messages and chats also remain in the conversations but become disassociated from the deleted account.
A practical order for the task
- Record the username, profile link and any known subscriptions.
- Confirm whether lawful access or documented instructions exist.
- Review public material and preserve genuinely useful posts, links and context.
- Check moderator roles and arrange reasonable community continuity.
- Remove particular posts or comments before account deletion, if authorised and appropriate.
- Cancel Reddit Premium separately and confirm the billing route.
- Report impersonation, scams or harmful content through the relevant Reddit route.
- If there is no lawful access, submit a support or privacy inquiry rather than trying to bypass security.
- Delete only if the decision is settled and the authorised person can complete Reddit's account-confirmation steps.
- Keep a dated note of what was preserved, reported, cancelled or requested.
There is no need to settle every digital account at once. For Reddit, the most important points are to act lawfully, preserve first, account for community responsibilities and understand that deletion will not remove the person's contributions automatically.
