How to Notify Hastings Direct After a Death in the UK
If a Hastings Direct policyholder, or someone named on a policy, has died, contact Hastings Direct and ask its bereavement team to explain the next steps. Before cancelling anything, check whether the car, home or other insured item still needs cover.
Hastings Direct's bereavement guidance says it has a specialist team who can talk you through what happens next. It also says supporting documents may sometimes be needed, for example where a large refund is due.
What this applies to
This guide is for Hastings Direct policies such as car, home, bike, van or related insurance. The exact process can vary by product and by how the policy was bought, so use the policy schedule as your starting point.
The practical question is not just "how do I tell them?" It is also "what must stay insured while the estate is sorted out?"
Information to gather first
Collect what you can, but do not delay notifying Hastings Direct if one document is missing.
| Information | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Policy number | Finding the account quickly |
| Full name of the person who died | Matching the policyholder or named driver |
| Date of birth and address | Additional identity checks |
| Date of death | Updating the policy record |
| Your name and contact details | So Hastings can follow up with you |
| Your relationship to the person | Helps explain your role |
| Executor or administrator details | May be needed for formal decisions |
| Death certificate | May be requested as supporting evidence |
| Vehicle registration or insured property address | Product-specific identification |
If several relatives are helping, agree who will be the main contact. Duplicate calls create confusion and can lead to mixed messages about cancellation, refunds or documents.
Contact Hastings Direct and explain the situation
Use Hastings Direct's current contact route from its bereavement support or help pages. Say clearly that you are notifying them of a death and need to understand what happens to the policy.
Ask these questions:
- is the deceased person the policyholder, a named driver, or both?
- is the policy still active today?
- can any named driver continue using the vehicle?
- does cover change because the policyholder has died?
- what documents are needed, and by when?
- should the policy be cancelled, transferred, amended or left temporarily in place?
- is any refund due to the estate?
Hastings Direct says it will let you know if supporting documents are needed and will allow time to provide them. If you are told something important by phone or message, keep a written note.
Car insurance: do not assume someone can keep driving
Car insurance needs particular care. A named driver is not always allowed to keep driving indefinitely after the policyholder dies. The answer depends on the policy wording, ownership of the vehicle, who is insured, and what Hastings Direct agrees.
Before anyone drives the car, confirm:
- that the policy is still valid
- who is insured to drive
- whether the car can be driven for sale, storage or family use
- whether a new policy is needed in the executor's or new owner's name
- whether the car must be kept off-road until cover is sorted
If the car is not being used, ask whether it remains covered while parked. Do not rely on assumptions, especially if the vehicle is kept on a public road.
Home insurance: check empty-property rules
If the person who died lived alone, the home may become unoccupied. Many home insurance policies have conditions for empty properties, such as inspection requirements or limits after a set period.
Ask Hastings Direct:
- how they define an unoccupied home
- whether the property remains covered
- whether locks, alarms, heating or water need attention
- whether valuables should be removed
- whether there are inspection requirements
- how long the current cover can continue while probate or sale is arranged
These questions are practical, not optional. A burst pipe or break-in during estate administration can be much harder to deal with if the insurer was not told the property was empty.
Documents and refunds
Hastings Direct may request supporting documents. This could include a death certificate, proof of authority, or executor details depending on the policy and whether money is due back.
If there is a refund, ask who it will be paid to and what evidence is required. Refunds normally belong to the estate. If there are outstanding premiums, cancellation charges or claim-related amounts, ask for a written explanation so the executor can record it in the estate accounts.
If there is an open claim
Tell Hastings Direct if there is an existing claim or recent incident. Claims can involve repairs, hire cars, settlement payments or third-party correspondence. The death of the policyholder does not remove the need to handle those properly.
Ask who will manage the claim, what authority is needed, and whether correspondence should go to the executor.
Keep the admin contained
A bereavement creates a long list of small tasks. Insurance is only one part, alongside banks, utilities, pensions, subscriptions and government notifications. GetPassage can help you keep a shared record of what has been done, what is waiting for documents, and what needs follow-up.
A simple order of action
- Find the policy schedule or email.
- Contact Hastings Direct through its bereavement or help route.
- Confirm whether cover continues.
- Check driving, empty-property and named-driver rules.
- Send any requested documents.
- Record refunds, cancellations or transfers.
- Keep the executor updated.
The goal is not to finish everything in one call. It is to make sure nothing uninsured or unresolved is left behind.
