How to Notify MORE THAN After a Death in the UK
If someone who held, or was named on, a MORE THAN insurance policy has died, you can notify MORE THAN through its online bereavement form or via its contact page. Before you cancel anything, check whether the policy is still protecting a car, home, pet or other item that the family still needs covered.
This guide is for the practical first steps. It is not legal advice, and MORE THAN may ask for different evidence depending on the policy type and the estate circumstances.
Start with the policy, not the paperwork
When you are grieving, it is tempting to treat every company notification as a simple closure task. Insurance is different. A policy can be protecting something that still matters today: a house that remains occupied, a car that has to be moved, or belongings that are still in the property.
Your first question should be: does this cover need to continue, transfer or end?
For example:
| Policy situation | Why it matters | What to ask MORE THAN |
|---|---|---|
| The deceased was the only car policyholder | Driving cover may not continue automatically for relatives | Can the vehicle remain insured, be transferred, or only be cancelled? |
| The home is still occupied | Buildings and contents cover may still be needed | Can cover continue while ownership or tenancy is sorted? |
| The property is now empty | Insurers often need to know about unoccupied homes | What conditions apply while it is empty? |
| The deceased was named on someone else's policy | The surviving policyholder may still need cover | Can the named driver or named person be removed? |
MORE THAN's public support page says that if you have lost someone who had, or was named on, a MORE THAN insurance policy, you can let them know by completing the online bereavement form or using the contact page. That is the cleanest starting point.
Details to gather before you contact MORE THAN
You do not need to have everything perfect before making contact, but having the basics ready reduces repeat calls and delays.
Prepare:
- the policyholder's full name
- their address and postcode
- the policy number, if you can find it
- the date of death
- your name, contact details and relationship to the person who died
- whether the policy is car, home, pet, travel or another product
- whether anyone still needs the cover to continue
- whether there is an executor, administrator or solicitor acting for the estate
If you cannot find the policy number, do not let that block you. Insurers can often search using name, address and date of birth, but they may need extra checks before discussing policy details.
What to say in the notification
Keep the first message short and factual. You are not trying to settle every question in one form.
You can write something like:
I need to notify MORE THAN that [full name] died on [date]. They held, or were named on, policy [number if known]. I am [relationship / executor / administrator]. Please confirm what happens to the policy, whether cover remains in place, and what documents you need from me.
If the policy protects a home or vehicle, add:
Please do not cancel the policy until you have confirmed whether cover is still needed and what options are available.
That sentence matters. It makes clear that the family needs guidance before any irreversible step is taken.
Car insurance: check who can legally drive
If the deceased was the policyholder on a car insurance policy, surviving relatives should not assume they can keep driving the vehicle. Even if they were a named driver, the death of the policyholder can change the legal and contractual position.
Ask MORE THAN:
- whether cover remains active after notification
- whether any named drivers can still drive
- whether temporary cover is available while the estate is sorted
- whether the policy can be transferred
- what happens to any refund or outstanding premium
- what to do if the car needs to be moved, sold or collected
Do not drive the car until the insurer has confirmed the position. If the vehicle will not be used, also check tax, MOT, storage and whether a Statutory Off Road Notification may be needed.
Home insurance: do not leave the property uninsured
Home insurance can be easy to overlook after a death, especially when everyone is focused on funeral arrangements and bank accounts. But a property can remain at risk from escape of water, storm damage, theft or accidental damage while the estate is being handled.
If the home is occupied by a surviving spouse, partner, relative or tenant, ask whether the existing policy can continue and whether the policyholder name needs to change. If the home is empty, tell MORE THAN that clearly. Empty-property conditions can be stricter than normal home cover, and the insurer may need details such as how often the property is checked, whether utilities remain connected and what security is in place.
Do not rely on assumptions. Ask for the answer in writing if possible.
What documents might be requested
For an initial notification, the insurer may not need every estate document immediately. Later, depending on the policy and whether money is due back or a claim is being made, they may ask for evidence.
Common documents include:
- a death certificate or scanned copy
- proof of your identity
- proof that you are the executor or administrator
- a grant of probate or letters of administration for some estate matters
- bank details for any refund due to the estate
- claim documents if the policy has an active claim
Only send copies through the insurer's official channels. Avoid emailing sensitive documents unless MORE THAN has specifically told you to use that route.
Refunds, premiums and direct debits
Insurance policies can involve money in both directions. There may be a refund if cover ends early. There may also be an outstanding premium if the policy was paid monthly.
Before cancelling a direct debit, ask what will happen to the policy. Cancelling the payment first can sometimes create a missed-payment problem before the bereavement team has updated the account.
If a refund is due, ask whether it is paid to the estate and what evidence MORE THAN needs before releasing it. If money is owed, ask for a clear final statement so the executor can include it in the estate records.
A simple checklist
Use this order:
- Find the policy documents or renewal emails.
- Identify what the policy protects and whether cover is still needed.
- Notify MORE THAN using the bereavement form or contact page.
- Ask them not to cancel essential cover until options are confirmed.
- Record the reference number, date and name of anyone you speak to.
- Send only the documents requested through official channels.
- Keep any refund or final-balance correspondence with the estate papers.
GetPassage can help you keep these notifications, documents and follow-up dates in one place, so you are not relying on memory while dealing with grief.
When to get extra help
Ask for help if there is a dispute about who can act for the estate, if the property is unoccupied and uninsured, if a claim is underway, or if the insurer will not explain the next step clearly. A solicitor, Citizens Advice or the executor named in the will may be able to help untangle the authority question.
The goal is simple: notify MORE THAN, preserve any cover the family still needs, and create a clear paper trail for the estate.
