If someone who has died had a SunLife policy, the most important thing is to work out what type of SunLife product they had before you make the call. That is because SunLife's process is not one single bereavement route: some claims are handled by SunLife directly, while some funeral plan claims are handled by the funeral provider instead.

In simple terms, if it is a life insurance or Over 50 plan cash claim, you will usually contact SunLife. If it is a funeral plan linked to Dignity, Co-op Funeralcare or Golden Charter, you normally contact that provider directly.

The short answer

To notify SunLife after a death, start by identifying the policy type and any funeral-plan provider listed in the paperwork. For many cash-sum and insurance claims, SunLife directs families to call 0800 008 6060 Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm. For some funeral plans, you should contact the funeral provider directly rather than SunLife.

First, work out what kind of SunLife product it is

This is the decision that saves the most time.

SunLife's public claims guidance separates cases into three broad groups:

  • Guaranteed Over 50 Plan cash claims
  • SunLife Insurance or EasyCover claims
  • Funeral plan or Funeral Benefit Option claims where a funeral provider may need to be contacted directly

If you have the welcome pack, policy schedule, or any recent letters, check them before you do anything else.

The main SunLife contact number

For many death-related claims, SunLife's public guidance says to call:

  • 0800 008 6060
  • Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm

SunLife also provides an online death claim form for some claims.

If you are not sure whether the policy pays a cash sum or provides funeral services, calling that main number first is still a sensible starting point.

What SunLife may ask for

The exact documents depend on the product, but SunLife's guidance commonly asks for some or all of the following:

What you may needWhy it matters
Policy number or policy documentsHelps route the claim correctly
Name and date of birth of the policyholderConfirms identity
Original death certificateStandard proof for death claims
Name of the claimantIdentifies who is making the claim
Evidence of entitlementShows why payment should be made to you or the estate
Copy of the will, if there is oneHelps confirm authority in some cases
Bank detailsUsed if a cash payment is being made

For some phone claims relating to the Guaranteed Over 50 Plan, SunLife says it may ask you to confirm that the death has been registered and provide the death certificate entry number and registration district.

If it is a SunLife life insurance or cash-sum claim

For standard insurance or cash-sum claims, SunLife's public guidance says the process is usually:

  1. Contact SunLife directly.
  2. Provide the policyholder's details.
  3. Send the requested claim documents.
  4. Wait for SunLife to verify entitlement and arrange payment.

Its published claims pages say families may be asked to return the policy schedule and endorsements, provide the original death certificate, and send any relevant will or entitlement evidence.

If documents are missing, SunLife specifically says to call rather than guess.

If it is a funeral plan claim

This is where many families lose time. SunLife's funeral plan guidance says that in some cases you should not contact SunLife as the first step. You should contact the funeral provider directly.

Dignity funeral plan claims

SunLife says Dignity-related claims can be made on:

  • 0800 456 1047
  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Co-op Funeralcare funeral plan claims

SunLife says Co-op Funeralcare claims can be made on:

  • 0345 602 0075
  • Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm
  • Saturday to Sunday 9am to 5pm

Golden Charter funeral plan claims

SunLife says Golden Charter claims can be made on:

  • 0800 171 2077
  • Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

For these provider-handled claims, the provider will usually want the policyholder's full name and address, the SunLife policy number, the relevant funeral-plan reference, and the original death certificate.

Cash sum versus funeral services

SunLife's funeral-plan guidance also says families can sometimes choose a cash sum instead of the funeral services. That can be important, but it is not a neutral choice.

Their public wording says that if you take a cash sum instead of the funeral services:

  • you may get less back than was paid in
  • the cash sum may be subject to Inheritance Tax

That means it is worth pausing before you choose. If the policy was bought specifically to provide funeral services, taking cash is not automatically the best outcome.

Where to send documents

SunLife's published insurance claims pages give this postal address for claim paperwork:

SunLife
PO Box 1395
Peterborough
PE2 2TR

If you are sending original documents, use a postal method you can track.

A practical checklist

Here is the cleanest order to follow:

  1. Find the policy paperwork.
  2. Identify whether it is a cash policy, insurance policy, or funeral plan.
  3. Check whether a funeral provider such as Dignity, Co-op Funeralcare or Golden Charter is named.
  4. Call the right number first.
  5. Ask exactly what documents are needed in your case.
  6. Keep copies or photos of everything you send.
  7. Note the date, time and name of the person you spoke to.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating every SunLife product the same

SunLife's public process is product-dependent. The wrong contact route can slow everything down.

Sending original paperwork before checking what is required

Always confirm what they need in your specific case.

Missing the funeral provider reference

If the plan is administered with a provider like Dignity or Co-op Funeralcare, that reference can matter as much as the SunLife policy number.

Assuming the estate has to wait for every answer before planning the funeral

If the policy includes funeral services, the provider may be able to guide next steps quickly once the right claim route is opened.

Support while you deal with the paperwork

SunLife's claims pages also signpost families to support organisations including Samaritans, Cruse, Marie Curie and MoneyHelper. That is worth using. Handling a claim often lands in the same week as funeral decisions and other notifications, which is a lot for anyone.

GetPassage can help by keeping those separate admin threads in one place, so you can see what has been notified, what still needs documents, and what is waiting on a response.

Final thought

The key to notifying SunLife after a death is simple: route the case correctly from the start. Once you know whether you are dealing with a cash claim, insurance claim, or funeral-plan provider claim, the process becomes much clearer and much less stressful.
