How to Notify Tesco Mobile After a Death in the UK

How to tell Tesco Mobile an account holder has died, what happens to other numbers on the account, and what to check before closing the service.

Tesco Mobile asks bereaved families to contact Customer Care on 0345 301 4455 or use online contact routes such as webchat or social support. If there are other mobile numbers on the same account, Tesco Mobile says those numbers may be transferred so people do not lose service.

That second point is important. Before asking for an account to be closed, check whether anyone else relies on the same Tesco Mobile account.

What Tesco Mobile says to do

Tesco Mobile’s bereavement help page says to contact Customer Care on 0345 301 4455, or contact them online through webchat or social network support. For business customers, Tesco Mobile gives a separate number: 0345 601 2448.

The public guidance is deliberately simple: get in touch and they will take care of the next steps. In practice, it helps to prepare the account details before you call or start a chat.

Details to have ready

You may not be asked for all of these, but having them in one place reduces repeat conversations:

  • the account holder’s full name
  • their Tesco Mobile number
  • their address and postcode
  • any account or customer reference you can find
  • the date of death
  • your name and relationship to the person who died
  • a death certificate, if Tesco Mobile asks for evidence
  • whether there are other numbers on the same account

If you are not the executor or administrator, be clear about your role. Tesco Mobile may still be able to record the death, but some changes may need to be handled by the person dealing with the estate.

Check for other numbers on the account

Tesco Mobile says that if there are other mobile phone numbers on the same account, they can be transferred to pay as you go so service is not lost, or to pay monthly subject to credit checking eligibility.

This is the main practical risk. A family member’s number may be attached to the deceased person’s account. If the account is closed too quickly, that person could lose service at exactly the wrong time.

Before closure, ask:

QuestionWhy it matters
Are there other numbers on the account? They may need to be transferred before closure.
Who uses each number?A partner, child or carer may rely on the phone daily.
Can a number move to pay as you go?This may preserve service without a new credit agreement.
Is a pay monthly transfer possible?Tesco Mobile says this depends on credit-check eligibility.
When would the deceased person’s number stop working? You may need time to move security codes first.

Do not close the number before checking security codes

A mobile number often controls access to digital accounts. Before closing the deceased person’s Tesco Mobile number, check whether it receives login codes or password reset texts.

Look at:

  • banking and savings apps
  • email accounts
  • Apple ID, Google Account or Microsoft account recovery
  • cloud photos and documents
  • social media accounts
  • utility accounts
  • insurance portals
  • pension or investment platforms

If you still need the number, explain this to Tesco Mobile and ask what temporary options exist. The aim is not to keep the account open indefinitely. It is to avoid cutting off access before important accounts have been secured.

Pay monthly, pay as you go and billing questions

The right questions depend on the account type. For pay monthly, ask whether there is a final bill, device plan, early termination issue, credit balance or refund. For pay as you go, ask what happens to any remaining credit and when the SIM will be disconnected.

Do not personally accept responsibility for a bill unless you understand what it is for. Debts and credits connected to the person who died normally belong with the estate, not automatically with the relative who makes the phone call.

Ask Tesco Mobile to confirm important decisions in writing, especially if:

  • there is a device plan or unpaid balance
  • another person’s number is moving to a new arrangement
  • a refund may be due
  • the account will remain open temporarily
  • service will end on a specific date

A simple call script

You can say:

I need to notify Tesco Mobile that the account holder, [full name], has died. Their mobile number is [number]. I am [your name], their [relationship]. Please tell me what you need to record the bereavement, and whether there are other numbers on the account that need to be transferred before anything is closed.

Then write down the name of the adviser, the date, any reference number, and the agreed next step.

Step-by-step checklist

  1. Find the phone number and any Tesco Mobile account details.
  2. Check whether other family members’ numbers are on the account.
  3. Check whether the deceased person’s number is needed for security codes.
  4. Call 0345 301 4455 or use Tesco Mobile’s online contact routes.
  5. Ask about closure, transfer options, final bills and written confirmation.
  6. Move important two-factor authentication away from the number.
  7. Save the confirmation with the estate paperwork.

GetPassage can help you keep this kind of task alongside banks, utilities and insurance notifications, so nothing depends on memory at a time when concentration is understandably difficult.

If you are not ready to deal with it today

That is okay. Secure the handset, keep it charged, and make a note not to cancel the number until you have checked other users and security codes. When you are ready, contact Tesco Mobile with the details above and take the process one step at a time.
